Prof. KP Singh

Dr. KP Singh is a distinguished academician, practicing librarian, Gandhian thinker, philosopher, teacher-activist, researcher, academic administrator, scrupulous manager, and erudite orator.  currently working as  Professor at the Department of Library and Information Science, Director, Gandhi Bhawan and Provost, PG Men's Hostel of University of Delhi. Also holds top professional positions i.e., Founding President, SRFLIS and President. Delhi Library Association President, Delhi Library Association, and Secretary (Media), National Teachers' Democratic Front (NDTF). 

A proud alumnus of DU with a gold medalist Master’s degree in Agriculture from Meerut University.  Also the proud recipient of national fellowships namely ICAR-JRF (Agri.); UGC-JRF/NET (LIS); and DRDO-JRF (LIS).  Did, B.Sc. (Agri) Hons, M.Sc. (Agri), MLIS, M.Phil., PGDCA, and Ph.D. (LIS).  Dr. Singh is the first faculty in Department who brought research projects and successfully completed three Major Research Projects funded by DRDO and UGC as Principal Investigator. Dr. Singh is also the first LIS teacher in the Department who was consecutively elected twice as Academic Council Member (2015-2019) for the highest statutory academic body of Delhi University. 

As a researcher did Ph.D. on ‘Information Seeking Behaviour of Agricultural Scientists working in select ICAR institutions in Delhi and Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana: A study from Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar in 2007. Since then, engaged in guiding research at Ph.D. and M. Phil levels on the areas of Information Seeking Behaviour, Metric Studies, Knowledge Organisation, Knowledge Management, Citation Studies, ICT Applications in Libraries,  Application of Social Media, Management Libraries and HRD, Electronic Resources and Information Wealth. Successfully supervised 12 doctoral theses, 33 M. Phil dissertations, and 125 MLIS projects.  

The voyage of my research publication was beginning with the joining of the University of Delhi. In 2002 first journal article i.e., ‘Automation in Libraries’ was published in Library Progress (International). Since then, I have authored 14 books, 17 edited books, 112 research journals, 27 conference papers, 28 book chapters, and 20 book reviews. The research has been regularly publishing in National and International scholarly journals like Library Management, Library Review, The Electronic Library, Library Hi. Tech., EMERALD, UK, Extension, and Corrections to the UDC(E&C), London, Library Review, DJLIT, Annals of Information Studies, Library Herald, SRELS Journal of Information Management, Library Philosophy and practices, ISALIC Bulletin, IJKCTD, JLIS, etc. My recent book titled ‘Playing from the Front: A Story of Unfolded Acts of a Library & Information Science Teacher’ is a monogram with the difference, new vista & design of publishing, which unfolds the initiatives & steps taken towards the evolution of library science in the current domain of transformation in the digital age. The forwarded of the book has been written by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Education Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’. The book was released by Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Shri Hon'ble Union Minister for State Parliamentary Affairs & and Galaxy of Intellectuals and Achievers from varied Fields of excellence in India. 

Since joining the University of Delhi with my best capacities contributing to the corporate affairs for the Department, University, and Profession. Had enormously contributed to the department in teaching, training, research, and development. While serving as Coordinator of the Department, Prof. Singh brought drastic changes in the entire landscape of the department in terms of infrastructure development, renovation of the entire department, creation of seminar hall, and image building. As a key person organized the 72nd Annual Day Function -2018 of the Department, which was graced by His Excellency, the then Governor of Gujarat, Prof. OP Kohli, and other distinguished dignitaries of the country. For the first time on this occasion, 14 great teachers and old alumni of the department were felicitated by the then His Excellency, Prof. OP Kohli.  I also took a bold and brave decision for the first time in the history of the Department by organized the first Alumni Meet in 2020.   

As a teacher, I have also played a great role in preparing, organizing, indexing, and publishing the NAAC documentation of the University in 2018. Since 2018, I am contributing my scholarly expertise in the compilation of the annual report of the University. I am also associated with several committees of the University on admissions, appointments, promotions, evaluations, academic affairs, and examinations. Currently,  a member of the University Court of Delhi University. As a Coordinator, Academic and Cultural Affairs, Faculty of Arts, acts as an instrumental in bringing out the first multidisciplinary and multilingual research journal i.e., WE- A Multidisciplinary and Multilingual Peer-Reviewed Research Journal, published by the Faculty of Arts and Creation of the first ‘Hall of Fame- Pride and Pearls of Faculty of Arts, University of Delhi.

Since joining the profession, I am a life member of all national professional associations such as ILA, DLA, PLA, IASLIC, SIS, SRFLIS, MANLIBNET, IATLIS, DUTA, and NDTF.  As an active professional and teacher activist. I am vigorously engaged with the Delhi Library Association (One of the most vibrant and productive professional associations of the country which was established in 1939). I served as honorary library teacher of the school of Library Science, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, Sr. Vice President of Delhi Library Association. Since 2015 holding the position of General Secretary. I am also the founder President of the SR Foundation of Library and Information Science (SRFLIS) in 2009. In addition, as a teacher activist, I am the Secretary (Media, National Democratic Teachers’ Front (NDTF). 

God is fortunate enough to me as he has given me enormous opportunities to organized various academic and professional activities. As Coordinator of the department organized several lecture series; first magnificent 72nd Annual Day Function-2018. As Course, convener/coordinator organized Refresher and Orientations Courses at Centre for Professional Development in Higher Education (CPDHE), the University of Delhi in 2018, 2019, 2020 & 2022. As President of SR Foundation for Library &Information Science (SRFLIS) and General Secretary of Delhi Library Association organized three International Conferences in 2014,2015 & 2019 as an Organizing Secretary.  As a Team Leader of ‘AlumniMeet-2020’ organized the first ‘Alumni Meet-2020’ on 18th January 2020 at the University Conference. This meet was attended by more than 520 old alumni of the department gathered from more than 21 states of the country. The gorgeousness and grandeur of this event was the presence of the first batch 1947-1948 student i.e., Prof. Girja Kumar a living legend of 95 years old and current batch student of 2019-2020. Further,  on the completion of 75 years of the Department as Organizing Secretary organised 11 high level of academic programs under the series as 'Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of Department (1946-2021). On this occasion also published FOUR Magnificent Books.
